Spanish Fort’s Elaine Wood and Foley’s Brittney Davis combined for 66 points and eight three-pointers in a 66-61 overtime win for Spanish Fort.
Foley (3-15) jumped out to a 35-21 lead at the half behind 26 first-half points from Davis. Spanish Fort (9-10) head coach Angie Puckett made adjustments at the half and held Davis to just four points in the second half. The Lady Toros closed the gap to 49-41 by the end of the third period and tied the game at 56 on three free throws from Wood after she was fouled behind the three-point line with 5.3 seconds left in regulation.
“We focused more in the second half,” Puckett said. “We did a much better job of stopping Brittney. We knew how good she is. We applied a lot more pressure and asked the girls to drive inside to get to the hoop for fouls and free throws.”
“They played tougher defense on (Davis) in the second half, just like we did on Wood,” Foley head coach Sally Jeter said. “Coach Puckett does a great job making adjustments at half time so I knew she would come back with something on us. They made Brittney settle for outside shots instead of going to the rim when she did get the ball.”
Spanish Fort took its first lead of the game at 3:13 of the overtime period on a basket from A.C. Whaley. Down the stretch the Toros made 8-of-11 free throws and held Foley to just two points in the final two minutes.
“We kept on fighting,” Puckett said. “We got down by a lot and we had to scrap and come back one basket at a time.”
“Spanish Fort did the little things at the end that win games,” Jeter said. “They made shots, stay composed and we just couldn’t match that.”
Wood finished with a game-high 36 points on 11-of-23 shooting. She hit 9-of-9 free throws, including seven that came in crucial situations with under 10 seconds to play in regulation and overtime.
“She is extremely clutch,” Puckett said of Wood. “She has the ability to take her game to another level. When the pressure is on is when she is at her best.”
Tayo Scott added 13 points for Foley, while Shannon Paaymans and Madison Robson had seven points apiece for Spanish Fort.
Both teams will be in action at 6 p.m. Friday as Spanish Fort visits Gulf Shores in 5A Area 2 play and Foley hosts Fairhope in 6A Area 3 play.
Boys: The Spanish Fort Toros beat the Foley Lions 47-29 on Tuesday night at Foley High. Austin Depperschmidt led the Toros with 14 points and Reagan Eubanks added 10 in the win. Melo Harris had 14 points for Foley in the loss. Both teams will play Friday night at 7:30 as Foley hosts Fairhope and Spanish Fort visits Gulf Shores.
The Spanish Fort junior varsity boys defeated Foley 54-52 in double overtime.
