SPANISH FORT, Alabama - The Lady Toros soccer team used a couple of two-goal scorers to beat section 1 and rival Gulf Shores 5-0 Friday night on “The Hill” in Spanish Fort to pick up a big regular season win.

“We controlled tonight’s game very well. We felt liked tonight’s game was very important and we played very composed,” Toros head coach Barclay Kercher said. “We followed the game plan nicely and we did what we were supposed to.”

Two players that played very well and had an impact on Friday’s game were senior Rebekah Diring and sophomore Steely Holmes. Each player tallied two goals for the Toros on Friday night.

“It was Steely’s first two goals for us this season, so for us it was really nice to see her play soccer like I know she is capable of,” Kercher said. “Diring, ready to pull the trigger did a good job too. That’s something that if the girls need to realize if you want to score you have to shoot. That’s what we came out to do and that was our game plan.”

Freshman Anna Claire Whaley scored the other goal on the evening. Diring also tallied three assists on the evening’s five goals for the Toros. Freshman Madison Diring and Klara Feile also picked up one assist each.

The defense led by senior goal keeper Johannah Scott and the other members was also on display Friday night. They held the Dolphin scoring attack to just five shots on the evening.

“You have to talk about the defense. Calley (Sholder), Paaymans (Shannon) in the back, they controlled the back line,” Kercher said. “Gulf Shores had some speed up at the top and they put some pressure on us. The defense did a great job in the back.”

With the win the Lady Toros improve their overall record to 10-1 while their section record remains untainted at 2-0. Also with the win they remain in first place in the section over second place St. Paul’s.

“We are going to have to pick up our speed of play and not let our record go to our head. We are starting to play good soccer but we need to play better,” Kercher said. “We need to continue to play as a team and realize that we are out here to do one thing and that is to play as a team and to accomplish our team goals.”

The Toros will be back in action again March 22 when they travel to Daphne to take on Bayside.
