SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Their mothers must be so proud.
Their hair hair was perfect, their dance moves unrivaled.
But it was Bryson “Brandy” Stringer’s poise and performance under pressure that earned the junior the first title of Mr. Spanish Fort Beauty Queen Wednesday afternoon.
“He was amazing,” said Casi Quinlivan, a speech and language pathology teacher and cheerleading sponsor who organized Spanish Fort High School’s inaugural “womanless” beauty pageant.
With a “Pretty in Pink” theme, the contestants made their entrances accompanied by Aerosmith’s “Dude Looks Like a Lady” wearing white T-shirts, khaki shorts and pink sarongs. They then danced to Shania Twain’s “Man, I Feel Like a Woman,” before changing into their evening wear.
Following their individual walks, the field was narrowed to 10 contenders for the crown, and it was time for the harrowing question-and-answer portion of the competition, when senior and runner-up Reese “Rohanda” Dismukes nearly stole the show.
When asked to describe herself in three words, “Rohanda” replied, without missing a beat, “Sexy. Gorgeous. Pricey.”
Quinlivan said nearly 530 students packed the gym to watch 22 contestants glide, perform and inspire, all while raising $1,583 for the SFHS varsity cheerleaders’ scheduled halftime appearance at the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans in January. The majority of the pageant contestants were football players.
Wearing a seafoam green cocktail dress and pink cowboy hat, Stringer’s stage presence clearly set him apart from the competition, Quinlivan said.
“We asked all the contestants to wear cowboy hats during their performance of (Twain’s) ‘Let’s Go Girls,’ but (Brandy) kept the hat on for the rest of the pageant. It really went a long way with the judges,” she said.
“It was all in good fun, and everybody had a great time, but mainly we want to thank the football players and coaches for supporting the cheerleaders. We support them every week — cheering them on and making them goody bags — so it was an awesome role reversal for them to do this for us,” she said.
To be clear, Quinlivan said Wednesday’s fundraiser — which she would like to see become an annual event — is in no way affiliated with the annual Mr. SFHS competition. The winner of that honor is based on a variety of factors, including academic performance; voted on by the faculty and announced during the Miss SFHS competition in the spring.
Stringer, who also won “Best Poise,” was joined by the following contestants sharing the individual category spotlights:
*Best Smile: Freshman Cody “Caroline” Anderson
*Best Personality: Senior Chris “Christie” Beasley
*Best Dress: Senior Adam “Adrianna” Adcock
*Best Dancer: Senior Tavares “Tonya” Ambrose
