SPANISH FORT, Ala.—The Spanish Fort City Council recognized during its June 6 meeting two of Spanish Fort High School’s five 5A state championship teams for the 2010-11 school year, bringing the school’s total haul to seven.

Both the SFHS baseball and girls’ soccer teams received certificates of recognition for besting competitors statewide.

"We’re very proud of our youth here in Spanish Fort, and they just keep outdoing themselves," said Mayor Joe Bonner.

The baseball team actually brought home its second consecutive 5A title, with baseball coach Tommy Walker and girls’ soccer coach Barclay Kercher sharing the title of Co-Baldwin County Coach of the Year for 2010-11.

Only moments later when the council voted unanimously to uphold its end of a standing agreement with the Spanish Fort Sports Association and gave the organization $10,000 each toward baseball and softball services, District 5 Councilwoman Mary Brabner, said the return-on-investment was apparent.

"In light of two (baseball) state championships, I think it’s money well spent," Brabner said of the budgeted item.

SFHS, which only recently completed its fourth year as a school, has earned 5A state championships in track and field, cross-country and football as well.
