SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Spanish Fort High School honored more than 75 graduating seniors Thursday during its annual Awards Night celebration, and one truth resounded repeatedly throughout the evening: the Toros’ best and brightest are more than prepared for life after high school.

Guidance counselor Angela Dunnam said the program honored a class of 204 students who netted nearly $5.6 million in total scholarships.

“The scholarship amount exceeded the Class of 2010’s scholarship amount by $2 million. They have far exceeded any goals and expectations with their diligence,” Dunnam said.

SFHS Principal Marty McRae said the school’s dedicated teachers and involved, supportive parents can take substantial credit for the Class of 2011’s success.

“I believe our students are prepared for whatever awaits them after high school,” he said. “We as a school, community and family know the importance of a quality education (that) will open doors to a variety of opportunities. This year’s senior have excelled in and outside the classroom, and we are so proud of all of their accomplishments.”

The majority of those honored appear bound for four-year institutions, but their paths are as diverse as the young leaders themselves, with some remaining close to home and others opting to defer enrollment until serving in various branches of the U.S. military.
