Spanish Fort nabs $200K ‘Safe Routes to School’ grant

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Although the decision has not been finalized, Spanish Fort could soon receive a grant totaling $200,000, earmarked for sidewalk construction and repairs.

Mayor Pro Tem Mike McMillan said "all indications" from the Alabama Department of Transportation are that a "Safe Routes to School" grant could soon direct $115,000 toward construction of sidewalks at Spanish Fort Elementary School.

McMillan did not indicate how the remaining $85,000 would be spent, but noted "we certainly have plenty of places to use sidewalk money." He did note, however, that the nature of the grant – which requires no matching funds from the city – requires the sidewalks addressed meet "Safe Routes to School" guidelines.

McMillan also noted that Spanish Fort’s grant award through the program is the highest in both Baldwin County and statewide because the city is the only locale to receive more than $150,000 for its proposed projects.
