Spanish Fort officials decline to support megasite purchase

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Spanish Fort officials do not appear inclined at the moment to sign their names on a letter to the Baldwin County Commission supporting the purchase of a 3,000-acre megasite near Bay Minette.

The letter, drafted by Bay Minette Mayor Jamie Tillery, was circulated during Monday’s informal Spanish Fort City Council work session, where it failed to elicit consensus support.

"(Tillery) is a very enthusiastic lady who cares about her municipality the way we care about ours," Spanish Fort Mayor Joe Bonner told members of the council.

His unease with the letter of support – echoed by councilmen Dennis Dismuke, Mike McMillan and Tom Sawyer – centers around the county’s lack of a signed tenant for the $25 million bond issue.

"I told her there was no end result with somebody coming and no light at the end of the tunnel. I just think it’s bad financial timing," Bonner said.

Dismuke said he opposed supporting the purchase "without somebody to come in there to offset the cost and build for the future."
