FOLEY, Alabama – Winning pitcher Jesse McCord had six strikeouts in five innings as three-time defending Class 5A state champion Spanish Fort beat Bayside Academy 10-0 on Monday in BayBears Classic pool play in Foley.

McCord scattered six hits for the Toros (1-0), coached this season by former University of Alabama baseball player Brent Boyd.

“I think he is only going to get more in the zone,” Boyd said of McCord. “I expect Jesse to come out and go to work to make the next outing even better. That’s what I like about him. He comes out here and he is never satisfied. He always wants to get better.”

Spanish Fort scored on a McCord sacrifice fly RBI and a Brian Lane RBI double in the first inning. Will Luft added a two-RBI double in the second inning. Lane led off the third inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch to give the Toros a 5-0 lead.

Luft added a solo home run in the fifth and Tyler Trammell, Reagan Eubanks and Robert Perteet added RBIs in the sixth.

“The guys played well, we came out swinging the bats,” Boyd said. “It was good to see them play with a lot of confidence and a lot of effort. They took care of business when they had to. They swung at good pitches and made their hitters counts count.”

Both teams will be back in BayBears Classic pool play in Foley on Tuesday as Spanish Fort will play Baldwin County at 4 and Bayside will play Foley at 6 p.m.
