SPANISH FORT – The Spanish Fort Toros (5-2) beat the Vigor Wolves 37-16 Friday behind three rushing TD’s from sophomore quarterback Otis Smith.
The Toros’ dominant rushing attack and potent defense held their conference rival in check, adding a notch for Spanish Fort in this budding rivalry.
Senior running back Elijah Peters scored at 8:58 in the first on a 4-yard run to give the Toros an early 7-0 lead.
With 7:35 left in the first, Toros’ defenders knocked the ball loose from Vigor’s quarterback but the Wolves recovered and punted away on the next down.
On the next possession, Spanish Fort fumbled at 2:58 but recovered at the Wolves’ 25-yard line.
The very next play, junior wide receiver Billy Harris caught a 4-yard TD pass from senior quarterback Patrick McGavin to give the Toros a 13-0 lead after an unsuccessful PAT.
Spanish Fort limited Vigor to no first downs for the duration of the first quarter.
On the opening play of the second quarter, McGavin threw an interception and Vigor took over at their own 8-yard line.
At 5:32, Vigor scored on an 11-yard TD pass to cut the Toro lead to 13-8 after a successful 2-point conversion.
At the 1:57 mark, the Toro crowd gasped collectively as its star rusher, Peters, was carried off the field by teammates.
It was reported that he suffered a high ankle sprain; Peters was walking the sideline with teammates but did not return to the game.
Senior kicker Derrick Hosch connected on a 37-yard field goal with 1:32 in the half to give Spanish Fort a 16-8 lead.
Junior defensive back Christopher Beasley intercepted a Vigor pass in the Toros' end zone. At the 1:38 mark, Smith scored on a 12-yard TD run to put Spanish Fort ahead 23-8 after a successful PAT.
With 8:05 left in the fourth, Smith scored his second rushing TD with a 9-yard run to give the Toros a comfortable 30-8 lead.
Vigor ran it in from the Toros’ 1-yard line with 2:47 left in the game to cut Spanish Fort’s lead to 30-16 after a successful 2-point conversion.
With 1:23 to go, Smith scored his third rushing TD to put the Toros up 37-16.
