GULF SHORES – Spanish Fort lost the 5A Area 2 regular season title on a coin toss, but the Lady Toros won the Area 2 tournament on the field.

Spanish Fort (27-13-2) defeated regular season champ Gulf Shores twice on Saturday to win the area championship.

“We really played well today,” Spanish Fort head coach Justin Moore said. “Our intensity level was great. I thought we matched their (Gulf Shores’) intensity at the start and kept it up the whole game. In the fourth we had some good at bats and took their pitcher deep into counts, and I thought that helped wear them down. I am super pleased with how we played.”

Spanish Fort won the championship game 6-1. The Lady Toros built a 3-0 lead on an RBI double from Amie Kelley early on and on a two-run double from Tara Wilkinson in the fourth.

Spanish Fort scored twice in the fifth and added a run in the top of the seventh when Lexi Allen hit an RBI double.

Ashley Marty (13-5) got the win for Spanish Fort in the championship game.

The Lady Toros will play Area 1 runner-up Faith Academy in the 5A South Regional at Gulf Shores on Friday at 9:30 a.m. Gulf Shores will play Area 1 winner St. Paul’s at 8 a.m. on Friday in the regional.

“We needed to win today to set up the best possible match up for us in the regional,” Moore said.

Spanish Fort defeated Gulf Shores 5-1 and Escambia County (Atmore) 15-0 earlier in the day.

6A Area 4

Satsuma defeated Daphne 3-0 to win the 6A Area 4 championship.
