Spanish Fort's Deon Johnson arrested on first-degree rape charge

DAPHNE, Alabama — Spanish Fort High School football standout Deon "D.J." Johnson was arrested Tuesday on a first-degree rape charge by Daphne Police.

Daphne Police Department spokesman Lt. Jud Beedy said Wednesday afternoon that Johnson was arrested at Spanish Fort High Tuesday about 2 p.m. on new charges allegedly involving forcible rape against a different victim than the charges brought by Daphne P.D. earlier this month.

"He spent the night in our jail and was transported to the Baldwin County correctional facility this morning," Beedy said. "We are not releasing the age or other information about the victim at this time, but this is rape - first degree - not second. So forcible compulsion is a factor."

It is the second time this month that Johnson, 19, has been arrested. He was first arrested Sept. 6 on second-degree rape and sodomy of a victim under the age of 16. Johnson, a University of Alabama football commitment, was released on bond and played in Spanish Fort's win over Faith Academy on Friday night after missing games against Gulf Shores and B.C. Rain.

Baldwin County Board of Education spokesman Terry Wilhite would not comment on the arrest.

"Any time a student is arrested, we work with authorities as they request assistance and out of respect for the investigation we just cannot make any remarks," Wilhite said.
