Dorothy Swedelius Spater, born Oct. 18, 1914 in Toronto, Canada, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009 in Fairhope.
She was a graduate of the Marietta Johnson School of Organic Education and Daphne State Normal School. she was a teacher in Magnolia Springs and at the Riverside Church in New York, where she maried Richard P. Spater in 1938.
In 1947 her husband’s career with Trans World Airlines took the family to Paris and later to Geneva, Zurich, Rome, Boston and again to Paris before the couple returned to Fairhope to retire in 1968.
During retirement she was able to nurture a lifelong interest in poetry and fiction. She was a member of the Pensters in Fairhope and she participated in many wirters conferences, including Breadloaf at Middlebury College in Vermont, the Squaw Valley Community of Writers in California and Sewanee. At Breadloaf she was awarded a scholarship in recogniztion of her unique talent.
Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Spater of San Francisco; and a son, George G. Spater of Fairhope.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Carroll Place and Mercy Medical Hospice for their compassionate care.
