Spend less money, more time

Alabama’s Gulf Coast offers many adventurous attractions for people who just want to ‘let their hair down’ and have a good time. Yet, with today’s economic crisis, many people are reluctant to travel, shop or spend money on what is typically considered ‘extras.’ From museums to beaches and water slides, people can gather for a short road trip. There are multiple zoos, hiking trails, historical buildings and amusement parks surrounding Baldwin County residents.

Lions, camels, bears, monkeys and other creatures are inhabitants of local zoos that host over 290 animals. Some zoos are located within a few blocks from the beach. Being that it is generally free to play at the beach, does it cost too much for a small family to visit the zoo in the same day?

From Go Kart tracks to a room full of arcade games, children and adults can participate in activities that will bring a smile to any face—at less than the cost of a trip to an out-of-state amusement park. The skyscraper allows for an adrenaline rush and mini-golf is a family favorite. However, is it impossible for a family to afford an evening of fun and still enjoy a reasonable meal at a nice restaurant?

Seashells, wetlands and various birds can be discovered as interests of nature at area state parks. Some parks offer swimming, fishing and areas for a group picnic. Most parks are cost-efficient for the average family.

Unique boutiques and restaurants are available for the family who loves to dine and shop. With media stressing the importance of ‘holding on to your money,’ do you think that most families are doing just that? What will happen to area businesses if people spend less and live more cheaply? If people are not going ‘all out’ anymore, many luxury services will not be utilized as in the past. Will limo services lose customers? Will salons attract less clients? These are all important to consider.

If families are trying to spend less money when planning family trips or excursions, they must remember to at least spend time together. Also, some of the greatest gifts have no price attached.

Yet, it is evident that spending is still required for the economy to survive.
