Virgil Spivey was born in 1913 in Geneva County.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving the army in Cold Bay, Alaska. He was a 1939 art major graduate of the University of Alabama.

For 33 years in Brewton, he served the longest rural mail route in the United States, retiring in 1975. In 1979, he and his wife, Hazel Burgess, moved to Fairhope. In Fairhope, he was actively involved in the Fairhope United Methodist Church, Eastern Shore Art Center, and numerous civil and social groups.

Survivors include a daughter, Beverly (Tom) Key, of Decatur, Ga.; and three grandsons, Simon, Stephen and Charlie Key.

Visitation was be held on Monday, Nov. 24 at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Fairhope United Methodist Church. Interment followed at Colony Cemetery.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Ecumenical Ministries.
