Splash park free to use for remainder of 2011

SUMMERDALE, Ala. - The Summerdale Splash Park will be free to use for the remainder of the summer.

The Summerdale Town Council unanimously agreed Monday to amend an ordinance previously adopted to not charge non-Summerdale residents to enter the splash park.

The park is open through Sept. 30, and Councilwoman Norma Giles said the town would re-visit in January the idea of charging people to enter.

The town adopted an ordinance at the July 11 council meeting to begin charging non-Summerdale residents $2 to enter and a family rate of $5 to enter. Summerdale residents and employees would be allowed to use the park for free if they obtain a card from the town.

Tiffany Lynn, town clerk, said people asked if the exemption of the fee applies to the police jurisdiction or voting jurisdiction, and it was confirmed the ordinance said "city limits."

"Residents are asking if they qualify for the card," Lynn said at the council work session held prior to the council meeting Monday.

"How much revenue are we losing by not charging," Councilman Gerald Hughes asked, and no one gave a specific number but Councilman Myles Bishop did give the amount the town is paying after hiring an attendant to oversee the maintenance of the park. The attendant is paid minimum wage and works 24 hours a week, which equals $174 a week.

Lynn said two more would be hired if the park began charging residents.

Mayor David Wilson was not in attendance due to having surgery last week. Councilman Travis Townsend also was not in attendance.
