Nearly 90 percent of Baldwin County’s registered voters are eligible to cast ballots Aug. 7 in the sprawling Alabama Senate District 32, which includes all voting precincts except seven sites located in Senate District 22.
Probate Judge Adrian Johns said the Baldwin County Board of Registrars told him Monday that Precinct 11, located at the Lottie Fire Department, also was a split district with eight eligible voters.
“The board reviewed detailed maps from the state and discovered eight voters who had previously been in District 22 that should have been in District 32,” Johns said.
Johns said Tuesday there “seems to be quite a bit of interest in the election,” but declined to make a turnout prediction.
The special election will replace Bradley Byrne, R-Montrose, who resigned the post this summer to become chancellor of the state’s two-year college system.
Johns said voting in the district’s seven split precincts will be carefully monitored by poll workers who will check precinct maps and voters’ lists to ensure voter eligibility.
“We want the split districts to be transparent to the voter and should cause them no difficulty,” Johns said. “Voter lists will contain the names of the eligible voters to determine whether or not they get a ballot.”
Seven of the county’s precincts are in Senate District 22 and seven are split between districts 22 and 32. There are 86,946 eligible voters in District 32 and 93 percent are listed as active, according to Probate Office records.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Deputies will transport data packs containing the results to the Baldwin County Administration Building in Bay Minette for public tabulation.
As precinct votes are counted, they will be posted on the Internet. Go to co.baldwin.al.us, click Probate and follow the links.
As precinct results are tallied, a precinct number will illuminate on the right side of the screen. Cumulative votes and percentages will be listed at the left side of the screen and individual precinct results will appear in the center of the Web page.
