DAPHNE, Ala.—The United States Sports Academy will host its annual awards ceremony and a sports summit Friday from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

“It’s an international panel of sports leaders, and the theme is a 20-20 vision of sports,” The academy’s communications coordinator Leigha Bolton said. “They will be discussing what you can expect to see in the next 10 years as far as sports development.”

Before the ceremony begins, the honorees will discuss issues in sports in a “Sport Summit” at 1:30 p.m.

The awards ceremony will begin at around 3:15 p.m. and it will honor United States Naval Academy athletic director Jack Lengyel, University of Alabama assistant athletic director Mike Vollmar, University of South Alabama baseball coach Steve Kittrell, sports medicine specialist Kevin Carroll, sports columnist Evan Weiner and Chinese sports entrepreneur Guo Jie.

Lengyel was the former Marshall University football coach who helped rebuild the program after a tragic plane crash killed many players. He and Jie will receive honorary doctorates from the academy, and Daphne Mayor Fred Small will present the keys to the city of Daphne to Lengyel.

Vollmar is a graduate of the sports academy’s master degree program, and he will receive the “Alumnus of the Year” award.

Kittrell and Carroll will receive “Distinguished Service” awards, and Weiner will receive the Ronald Reagan Media award.
