ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – Talk of putting a signal on Canal Road at the Orange Beach Sportsplex has been going on for more than a year at least, but work is finally beginning.

Starting Monday morning, the signal work will begin. Signs warning motorist to expect delays have been up for about a week.

The signals were removed from the east and west entrances to The Wharf and given to the city for the Sportsplex. Traffic studies had to be conducted and delays ensued.

City officials believe that will help break up traffic during tournaments at the facility, Parks and Recreation Superintendent Danny Martin said.

Last year there were 88 tournaments on Pleasure Island and this year even more are scheduled, according to the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism Sports Commission.
