St. Louis residents lead 'Spending Caravan' into Daphne Tuesday

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—As clean-up continues from the country’s worst environmental disaster, a group of concerned St. Louis residents plan to spend a week leading a caravan of support across the Gulf Coast, spending money at small businesses along the route with funds raised from around the country.

The caravan team has been collecting money through its website, the Facebook social-networking site and word of mouth, and supporters can donate as much as they wish, all of which will be spent through Aug. 13 at small businesses along the Gulf. Those who contribute $20 or more will receive an item purchased in their name during the caravan. Participants are covering their own transportation and lodging costs for the trip.

Organizer Dennis Gorg said, “We’ve learned of so many businesses in the Gulf region that are losing their customers, employees and dreams because of the impact on fishing and tourism. As a small business owner myself, I can’t imagine the impact on the people and community who depend on me. We can do something here. We can become tourists with a purpose.”

Those who can’t make the trip can contribute funds to spend on their behalf via PayPal by visiting the group’s website at www.gulfcaravan.com. Gorg emphasizes that this effort is not a charity, and donations are not tax deductible.

All along the Gulf the Caravan will stop at businesses. On Aug. 10, one of those stops will be businesses in the coastal community of Daphne. The Caravan was contacted by bakeshop owner Joan Scott. Scott owns Something Sweet Bakeshop.

In addition, Caravan participants will visit other area restaurants including Guido’s, and Camellia Cafe. One of the first stops will be Fastime Gas, where Mayor Fred Small will meet the Caravan.

“Our efforts aren’t just about us visiting, but also local community leaders, residents, and business owners coming out and supporting their businesses as well,” said Gorg. “We’re proud to add Daphne to our stops”.

Gorg said,

“We hope that these efforts lead to more spending and tourism for the long-term, not just during this week.”

Scheduled stops:

5:30 p.m. Fastime Gas, 2305 US 98, Daphne

6 p.m.: Something Sweet Bake Shop, 1712 Main St., Daphne
