DAPHNE – Saint Paul's volleyball team took two wins at Daphne last week.

The Saints topped Gulf Shores 25-23, 25-22 and DHS 25-22, 23-25, 25-16 in a tri-match at Trojan Gym.

Taking top teams like the Saints and McGill-Toolen three game still isn't good enough for Daphne coach Edoli Herrion.

"We had moments of brilliance and I thought our serve-receive and serving looked pretty good," she said. "We need to concentrate on our first ball kill. We have to work on putting the ball down, picking each other up, playing together and staying together."

Gulf Shores' coach Wing Brett said some lineup adjustments are showing some progress.

"Tonight was only the third time I had used this lineup," he said. "We're trying different lineups. Still learning and making changes. Hopefully for the better. We have a lot of competition for open positions. Tonight, we did some good things defensively but we have to get a lot better. Our ball control needs to improve."

The Lady Dolphins won the third match upending Daphne 25-20, 25-18.

Though ranked as the 5A No. 1 team,St. Paul's coach Kelli Hillier said her team is not where it needs to be.

"We're not playing our best volleyball right now," she said. "We came out a little flat tonight. We're very young and we're working on getting our younger kids some experience. Hopefully, we can grow and come together as the season goes on. In the first match with Daphne, we just weren't hitting to terminate the ball. We have some new players swinging for us but that's one thing that we need to improve on."

Katherine White led the Lady Saints with 22 kills.

Gulf Shores' Courtney Carter and Mary Layson Gottfried produced 13 kills each, Virginia Jones had eight kills with 12 digs, Laura Peavy had 31 assists and Alex Hackworth had 16 digs.

Daphne was led offensively by Cherilyn Ramsey's 16 kills, Deanna Vogler's 13 kills and Kayla Owens' 30 assists and by Krista Owens' 27 digs.
