Stabler facing DUI charges in Robertsdale

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — Former Foley High football standout Kenny “The Snake” Stabler was arrested Sunday, June 8 on Alabama 59 near Hub City Grocery around 12:30 a.m. for driving under the influence according to Robertsdale police. The police also say Stabler refused a breath test.

Stabler, 62, a former star quarterback for the University of Alabama and Oakland Raiders (he also played for the then Houston Oilers and the New Orleans Saints) pleaded no contest to a DUI charge in 1995 in Escambia County, Fla., and in 2001, he pleaded guilty to drunken driving after being arrested in Orange Beach. This was part of a deal where prosecutors dropped drug and reckless driving charges in exchange for that plea.

According to published reports, Stabler spent about 12 hours in jail and was released on $1,000 bond for the Robertsdale incident. He is scheduled to be in Robertsdale Muinicipal Court Aug. 13 for a preliminary hearing on the charges.

According to an Alabama Department of Public Safety Web site, if convicted, Stabler faces not less than 48 consecutive hours of imprisonment, or 20 days community service. He also will have his driver’s license revoked for one year. He could be sentenced to a longer term, and be assessed a fine ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.

Stabler led the University of Alabama football team (“The Crimson Tide”) to an 11-0 record in 1968. He earned All-American honors playing for coach Paul “Bear” Bryant in 1967. He was a member of the team that took Southeastern Conference championships in 1964,1965 and 1966. The Tide also earned national championships in 1964 and 1965. One of Stabler’s best-known plays is the “run in the mud,” which gave Alabama a 7-3 victory over Auburn his senior year, 1967.

He was taken in the second round of the 1968 National Football League draft.

As a member or the Oakland Raiders, he earned a Super Bowl ring in 1977, winning Super Bowl XI under head coach John Madden. His pro career spanned 15 seasons, and we was named the NFL’s passing champion in 1976.

While at Foley High, Stabler led the football team to a 29-1 record, averaged 29 points per game on the basketball team, and received minor league offers from the Houston Astros and New York Yankees farm teams.

He is now the “color analyst” for the Crimson Tide’s radio broadcasts.
