LOXLEY, Ala. — It seemed like an ordinary early morning along Interstate 10 on March 19.
A gold Honda Accord, bearing Florida tags, was driving erratically down the Interstate, and a Loxley Police Officer, his K-9 partner barking in the back seat, stopped the car around 1:30 a.m. near mile marker 44.
The driver of the car, Robert O’Ryan, 34, was stopped by Los Angles authorities March 24. They say he was found with two loaded weapons, duct tape and love letters to the 2008 Olympic gold medalist, who is 17.
Johnson’s family has obtained a restraining order against O’Ryan, and a hearing to see if the order should be in effect for a longer period of time will be held April 14. He was arrested outside the studio where “Dancing With The Stars” is taped.
O’Ryan is now being held in California on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm in public.
The Loxley officer who made the stop didn’t know of O’Ryan’s obsession.
A “dash cam” DVD released by the Loxley Police Department shows O’Ryan being pulled over for the routine traffic stop.
The officer, observing the loaded car, did ask about weapons and did use his flashlight to see into the car, but did not spot any weapons in the vehicle.
O’Ryan appeared polite and relatively oriented during his half-hour with the officer, which resulted in a “warning” for improper lane usage, the reason he was stopped, and two citations for having expired license plates and no proof of insurance.
According to those citations, Ryan was to appear in court in Loxley May 21 to answer those charges, but it now seems unlikely he’ll keep that date.
The DVD shows the officer asking O’Ryan about his trip.
“I have got a friend to meet,” said O’Ryan, adding later that “I’m meeting her there and, uh, I’m going to try to get her to marry me."
When the officer asked about his “friend,” O’Ryan said his friend was Johnson.
The officer did not seem to know who Johnson was. Under further questioning, O’Ryan revealed that he had a degree in engineering and no job lined up in California. He also revealed that his communication with Johnson was all via “ESP.”
“So, your communication with her has all been telepathic?” asked the officer, who asked O’Ryan if he was seeing a doctor or getting counseling.
After questioning by the Loxley officer, O’Ryan said he had no adult arrest record. That checked out when the officer asked dispatch about wants and warrants.
O’Ryan explained his expired tags as a result of his being ill with a back condition.
“I couldn’t drive,” O’Ryan said. “I was (pause) getting my health and strength back.”
O’Ryan said he had appointments with doctors about his back, and had declined surgery. He added that his caregivers had made an appointment with a psychologist, but he said, “I am not sure why they did that.”
O’Ryan said he was treating his bad back with traditional Chinese medicine, exercising and stretching.
The encounter between the officer and O’Ryan appeared relatively friendly and routine. As O’Ryan was exiting the squad car, the officer told him to “Drive safely and pay attention to what you are doing while you are driving down the highway.”
The officer then wished O’Ryan luck.
“Thank you,” said O’Ryan.
