Oil Painting for Beginners is being offered in the Kairos classroom at the Spirit Center, 915 N. Pine St. in Foley. Classes will be held each Wednesday, from 10 a.m. until noon, beginning Sept. 5th and continuing for 10 weeks through Nov. 7.

The cost for the course is $100 per person, which pays for the 20 hours of instruction and is due at the beginning of the course.

If you’ve ever seen a beautiful sunrise, sunset, seascape, or flower in full bloom and wished you could capture that on canvas, this is your chance. This course requires no previous experience or talent. Everyone can learn the basic techniques that will be taught.

The course instructor, Beverly McNair, has been a resident of Foley since 1989. She’s well known as a Foley Elementary first-grade teacher and retired two years ago. Since moving to Foley she has taught art and oil painting in her home and church in addition to public school teaching.

Prior to 1989, she taught art and oil painting in Wisconsin for 18 years at art galleries and senior centers. She founded the Northwoods Society of Painters. Bev has sold over 100 of her paintings.

Prospective students are asked to bring some paper and a charcoal pencil on Sept. 5. A supply list for the rest of the course will be reviewed and handed out at that first class. Upon completion of the course each student will have finished three still-life paintings, one seascape painting done with a palette knife, and a fifth painting of their choice.

The last week of class, Nov. 7, will include time to critique students’ work and information on framing oil paintings.

Enrollment in the course is open to all persons desiring to learn to paint with oils. For more information contact McNair at (251) 943-7786, or the Foley United Methodist Church office at (251) 943-4393. You may also visit www.foleyumc.org.
