• Gulf Shores’ Lorenz, Spanish Fort’s Wood claim Class 6A co-medalist honors at state

HUNTSVILLE—Charles Wood of Spanish Fort and Matt Lorenz of Gulf Shores finished their high-school careers with individual state titles at the Alabama High School Athletic Association State Golf Championships in Huntsville.

The seniors each shot a tournament-best 2-under par 142 for the 36-hole match at the Robert T. Jones Hampton Cove Golf Course. Lorenz fired a 3-under round-one best 69 and Wood closed with a strong 2-under 70 in the final round.

The Toros finished second just two shots back of team champion Homewood 593-591 in the Class 6A state championship. Padraic Sim helped the Toros with an opening round of 70 to finish even overall at 144.

“I am proud of our team for the way we played and carried ourselves all season,” said SFHS coach Dru Powell. “Unfortunately, we picked a bad day to have a bad day on Tuesday. Charles played a great tournament as he has all year, so his teammates and I were certainly glad to see him rewarded for that.”

Gulf Shores coach Josh Burleson said Lorenz’ victory was a fitting finish to his contribution to Dolphins’ golf program.

“This win for Matt is so big for him and our program at Gulf Shores,” he said. “He has worked so hard for the last four years. He was our only senior this year and his leadership and hard work pushed our younger guys. He has set a standard for our program and has left a huge mark on it. It was an honor to be along for this ride this year. I have loved being around him this year.”

Lorenz signed with the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Wood signed with Montevallo’s Falcons.
