SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Blakeley State Park has scheduled its next boat tour of the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta extending down through the State Docks and Port of Mobile for May 18.
The tour, rescheduled by request, is three hours long, leaving the Blakeley Park dock on the Tensaw River at 9:30 a.m. The Delta Explorer tour goes north into the wilds of the Delta, crosses over to the site of the Amtrak train disaster, passes the traditional site of the sinking of the Clotilde, the last slave ship to America, and down through the port.
It is the activity of large ocean going vessels and the shipbuilding at Austral and other yards on the Mobile River as well as the loading and unloading at the Alabama State Docks that has proven so popular with passengers on past tours, an event spokesperson stated. The tour will be narrated. Sights will depend on the activity of the day in the busy port.
Tickets are on a first come-first serve basis but may be reserved using major credit cards by calling Blakeley Park at 251-626-5581. Costs are $30 for adults, $15 for children 6-12 and free to children 4-5. The docks trip is also available by charter to groups with a minimum. For charters call 251-626-0798. All proceeds go to operate the park.
Blakeley Park is located on Alabama Highway 225 about 4.5 miles north of where it intersects with U.S. 31 at Spanish Fort.
