• Daphne girls finish as 6A state runner up, 7A Fairhope and 1A-3A Bayside boys fall in semifinals

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.—John Carroll Catholic High School (16-4-2) downed Daphne 5-0 in the AHSAA Class 6A girls’ state soccer championship match Saturday at Huntsville’s John Hunt Soccer Complex.

Daphne managed one shot on goal by team leading scorer Rachael Lane. The Trojans, coached by Dean Logan, finished their season 11-8-0 as the 6A state runner. Daphne defeated Northridge 1-0 in the semifinal match Friday. Lane nailed a 30-yard direct free kick in the second overtime to lift the Trojans to the win and advance to the title match. Daphne goalkeeper Valeria Aglietti had four saves for the Trojans. The Northridge Jaguars keeper Catherine Spence had four saves.

This was the second trip to the girls final four for Daphne since 2012.

The state title was the third girls’ soccer championship in school history and the second in a row for Coach David DiPiazza’s Lady Cavaliers.

Camryn Lyster of Carroll was named the Class 6A girls’ championship game MVP. She scored a hat trick in the finals with the match’s first goal at 12:39 followed by a goal at 51:52 and 76.45. Her last goal was a corner kick from the left corner of the field that sailed high and untouched into the corner of the net. She had an assist on John Carroll’s second goal – a kick by Claire McPherson at the end of the first half. Lindsey Flemming scored the other Cavaliers’ goal at 63:05.

John Carroll Catholic moved into the Class 6A state finals with a 3-0 win over Athens in the semifinals Friday. John Carroll won the 5A state crown in 2014 but moved up to 6A this season.

In their semifinal win over Athens, Lyster’s goal at 25:23 in the first half gave John Carroll’s attacking offense the lead. Caroline Moffit added the second goal at 45:23 and August Hamilton’s goal at 67:36 set up by a pass from Nicole Bernal closed out the scoring. Goalkeeper Tiffani Dunaway had three saves for Athens (13-2-7). Smith had two saves for the Cavaliers.

The Tigers (15-8-3) led 1-0 at the half versus Fairhope thanks to Avery Atkins’ goal at the 7:27 mark. His goal was set up by Quentin Shackett’s assist.  Auburn finished with Harun Kalin scoring at 74:11 and Sammy McIntosh closing the scoring with a goal at 78:08. That goal was aided by Atkins’ assist.
