STOCKTON, Ala. — The Faith and Knowledge Campus in Stockton will hold a talent show in conjunction with a free, community dinner 5:30-7 June 24 featuring area youth singing for attendees’ supper.
The inaugural event will combine the goals of cultivating youth’s abilities and bringing local families together, according to Director of Programs Alva Tate.
Dinner guests must RSVP, and youth must audition and pre-register by Friday so that judges can be sure materials are age-appropriate and family-friendly, she explained.
Children ages 5-17 can perform any kind of talent during the show and will be divided into age categories, which include 5-7, 8-10, 11-13 and 14-17.
“We wanted the community to see their children in action,” Tate said in a telephone interview. “It develops their talents and builds self esteem and a sense of success to perform in front of an audience. It gives them practice to be in front of the public.”
Summer Program Performing Arts Teacher Lois Tunstall said these sorts of activities are beneficial to young people.
“What I’m trying to do is display our talent from our youth in the community,” she said in a telephone interview. “When I was growing up, I wanted to play the piano very well and my mother couldn’t afford it (taking lessons). I wanted to give these kids the opportunity to showcase and develop their talent. It can help keep them out of trouble and keep them in school. We keep helping and keep finding outlets. That’s what we’re for.”
The group will serve baked chicken, string beans, spaghetti, rolls and dessert during the dinner.
For more information or to RSVP for the dinner or to pre-register for the Faith and Knowledge Campus Talent Search, call 937-5007 by Friday.
