BAY MINETTE, Ala. — A new oil-storage pad could be in store for Bay Minette businesses to use.
During its regular meeting Tuesday, the Bay Minettte Planning Commission unanimously approved a pad for Wal-Mart and other companies’ oil storage to include a two-year, land-portion lease that will contain a slab and storage tank.
Pending the site passes Alabama Department of Environmental Management regulations and city set-back rules, it will be located on a 50-by 60-foot parcel adjacent to the railroad tracks.
During Tuesday’s meeting, Manager of Complete Environmental Jerry Kelley explained that the site will be used to dump used motor oil from U.S. Environmental Services trucks and the oil will be stored in the 20-year tank until it is transported to an Atlanta site, where it will be cleaned for use in furnaces.
Kelly said the parcel is 40 feet from the railroad tracks, and the entrance will be “sloped at one end so trucks can drive in and loop around the three sides built up to the curb.”
He added that the area will have a septic tank and won’t require power, so rain water will be taken care of with the sump pump.
Bay Minette City Planner Oscar Waters said the project should require few resources.
“There’s no building,” he said. “It’s a slab, a tank and containment for the tank. So there's no problem with utilities.”
Waters said he observed the site Monday and planned to take another look that (Tuesday) afternoon.
Kelley told commission members that the concrete for the site is formed and ready.
Bay Minette Mayor Jamie Tillery suggested Kelley seek regulation-guidance from the Industrial Development Board on the project.
