FOLEY — South Baldwin residents and visitors looking for a little Yuletide spirit might want to head to Foley Civic Center next week, as the Foley Public Library presents award-winning storyteller Dolores Hydock.

In her third trip to the Forward City, Hydock will present “Santa’s Watching, So I Gotta Tell the Truth.”

“It is on Christmas stories that relate to our everyday life,” Foley Public Library Director Steve Horn said in an interview at the library. “They’re stories for the week of the holiday craziness.”

The free event is set to begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Foley Civic Center. It will also include refreshments provided by Friends of Foley Public Library.

“It’s just a chance to just relax and have a cup of cider and her some good stories,” Horn said.

He added that Hydock’s presentation is ideal for almost any age.

“Middle school through adults will be fascinated,” Horn said.

That’s because Hydock, who is also an actress and Cajun dance instructor, has a talent for bringing tales to life.

“She’s just one of those people that’s gifted to hold you riveted,” Horn said. “You never want her to stop talking.”

With numerous CDs to her name and several National Public Radio interviews under her belt, Hydock blends her tale spinning with dramatic emphasis.

“It’s almost as if everything she does is a one-woman play,” Horn said of the Birmingham resident.

Tuesday’s presentation will be in a casual setting, too.

“This is not a coast-and-tie event,” Horn said.

He added that those with hearing problems should not let that keep them from coming to see Hydock Tuesday.

“She will be completely miked,” Horn said.

While no admission will be charged Tuesday, donations will be accepted to benefit the Foley Public Library. For more information, call Foley Public Library at 251-943-1545. To learn more about Hydock and to view excerpts of her previous performances, visit www.StoryPower.org.
