Strong hitting, relief pitching help Sun Chiefs sweep SD baseball series at Jeff Davis

BAY MINETTE, Ala. - Faulkner State collected 38 hits in a three-game South Division sweep of Jefferson Davis in Brewton over the weekend, keeping alive the Sun Chiefs hopes of making it into the May 9-16 Alabama Community College Conference/Region 22 baseball tournament.

The Sun Chiefs banged out 12 hits in Friday’s 7-3 nine-inning win over the Warhawks and matched that total in a 5-4 seven-inning decision Sunday afternoon after getting 14 more in a 10-inning 7-5 win in the first game of the double header.

The sweep put the Sun Chiefs at 11-10 in South Division play, lifted them to 20-24-1 overall, and gave Faulkner a four-game winning streak. FSCC will be at home for this week’s South Division series, hosting Enterprise-Ozark in a nine-inning game at 4 p.m. Friday and a 1 p.m. twin bill Saturday.

FSCC will have next week off until Friday when coach Wayne Larker takes his team to Midland City for another crucial SD series against G.C. Wallace-Dothan.

FRIDAY

FSCC 7, Jeff Davis 3

Tim Daw, Tailor Holley, Tanner Williams, Adam Heisler and Chad Watson had two hits each in the series opener. Heisler’s were both via bunts and Daw and Holley had infield singles. Holley, Williams and Watson singled in runs, as did Chris Clements.

A three-run rally in the seventh put FSCC up 4-2, then the Sun Chiefs pushed four more runs across the plate in the eighth. Freshman Johnny Ladnier scattered eight hits in a complete-game win. He had two strikeouts and one walk.

SUNDAY

FSCC 7-5 Jeff Davis 5-4 (1st game in 10)

Williams had three hits with an RBI, and Daw, Zach Cates and Michael Tesco a pair of base hits apiece, Cates also singling home a run, and Watson belted a two-run double and Roy had RBI singles in the extra-inning first-game win.

Blake Summers was the winner in relief, tossing the last three-and-one-third innings Jeff Davis nine hits

Williams, Roy, Clint Brown, Lott and Cates had two hits apiece. Brown,, Roy and Cates had RBI singles, and Clements doubled in a run.

Jarrin Brister gave Larker another good relief outing to become the winner in relief. He pitched the last four-and-one-third innings. Jeff Davis had six hits.
