Student project teaches about local history, supports museum improvements

DAPHNE, Ala. — Project Jubilee students at W.J. Carroll Intermediate took a special look at Daphne and all the doors opened by knowledge of the past and present; they took a walking field trip and photographed doors of historic homes and icons to form a poster.

The posters are ready for purchase, and will cost $30; all proceeds will benefit the Old Methodist Church Museum of Daphne so it can buy equipment to protect historic documents, Blair Heald, the school’s gifted-education instructor, said.

The project also helped students learn where they come from, she said.

“It evolved, really, just to show the students the history that’s right here in Daphne,” she said.

Some of the poster’s contents include images of the Malbis Greek Orthodox Church, Bethel Baptist Church and Manci’s Antique Club, she said.

About 40 fourth- and fifth-grade students photographed doors last year during the field trip and as homework over the summer, she said. Then a graphic artist donated time to put everything together.

Heald wrote a grant request to SEEDS — Supporting Educational Enrichment in Daphne’s Schools — and the organization paid for cameras, software and other equipment, she said.

Enrich students, the project did, Heald said.

“It gave them a little better understanding of the community they live in and the historic area they live in, and some knowledge of architectural lingo as well,” she said.

Posters can be purchased at the school on Main Street or at The Frame Corner and Will Hughes Catering, both in Daphne.
