Student signatures heading into space

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Bay Minette Elementary School has been selected to participate in “Student Signatures in Space”, a nationwide outreach program sponsored by the National Aeronautics & Space Administration and Lockheed Martin Corporation.

Since the beginning of this project in 1997, the signatures of nearly 4.5 million students have been flown in space aboard the Space Shuttle, and our students at BMES will be the next to participate!

On Space Day, Thursday, May 1, our students will sign a poster we received in a package from NASA. We’ll return the poster to Lockheed Martin, and the signatures will be flown on a Space Shuttle mission. After the mission, the posters will be returned to the students with a flight certification and a photo of the Space Shuttle.

As you can see, participating in the project is simple, yet we are confident it will go far to stir students’ interest and enthusiasm about the astronomical possibilities in outer space!

Teachers and staff across our campus are thrilled at the possibilities this activity will launch for future learning opportunities.

Friday, May 2nd is an exciting day across our campus, too, as students gear up for our annual field day festivities! Students and teachers will spend the day in friendly competition playing games and challenging each other in relays. PTO will be selling concessions throughout the day. We are looking forward to this fun-filled day!

Our “Drench the Principal” fundraiser was a huge success! Our students rallied together to raise over $300, which brought us to our yearly goal of $1,000 for United Way. Mrs. Hall’s second grade class collected the most money, with a whopping total of $75. Each student in her class happily hurled water balloons at Mr. Langham. We are so proud of the generosity all of our students have shown this year by giving to such a significant organization.
