SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Spanish Fort High School Oct. 7 helped ‘Spike Out Autism’ during a volleyball game against Daphne High School.
The school’s Project Outreach club is geared “to help assist students with autism by connecting them to their non-disabled peers to help increase social skills and communication as well as provide an opportunity for awareness for the typical students,” Scott Parks, a Project Outreach teacher, said. “It has been a great success and Spike Out Autism is one of the products of Project Outreach.”
The event’s two goals were to give a friendly atmosphere to students with autism spectrum disorder and bring awareness in a way that promotes school spirit, Parks said.
“I feel we accomplished both,” he said.
Parks did not immediately return a phone call and an e-mail requesting the event’s proceeds, which he said would benefit the Center for Autism and Aspergers Resources.
