Students to send message of world peace

DAPHNE — On Sept. 21, many classes at W. J. Carroll Intermediate School plan to take part in an international art and literacy project, Pinwheels for Peace, by “planting” pinwheels with messages of peace at the oak tree in front of the school gym.

Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by two art teachers, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, of Coconut Creek, Fla., as a way for students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives.

Last year, over 1 million pinwheels were spinning in more than 2,350 locations, including the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada, the Middle East, Africa and South America.

W.J. Carroll teacher Blair Heald will coordinate the Pinwheels for Peace project at the school this year.

The Daphne school will create pinwheels and, as part of the creation process, students will write their thoughts about war and peace, tolerance and living in harmony with others on one side. On the other side, they will draw, paint or make a collage to visually express their feelings.

Students will assemble these pinwheels and on International Day of Peace they will “plant” their pinwheels near the oak tree in front of the school gym as a public statement and art exhibit/installation.

On Sept. 21, keep a lookout for the spinning of pinwheels in the wind.
