Sue Calahan, 72, has sailed away for her final destination. Her journey began Aug. 17, 1940 in Cottondale, Fla., and she completed her journey in Fairhope on May 12 2013.
Her passion was travel, but her compassion was volunteering. While working at Sears, Sue was so loved they called her “Susie Sears.”
Continuing her stops along the way, she joined the group PALS where she was referred to as the “Court Jester.” She was a member of the America Cancer Society, where she served on the board of directors and also as a lobbyist.
She spent many hours in what she named “The Tree House,” making and selling items for cancer awareness, and every year she helped and participated in Relay for Life.
Sue was a volunteer for many local groups, Wiregrass and Aseracare Hospice, Baldwin Barron’s Ball committee, Thomas Hospital Resource Center PR Office, and Thomas Hospital Women’sBest.
One of Sue’s joys in life was volunteering at the Fairhope Visitors Center, directing and advising visitors to sites and flavors of Fairhope. Even strangers were touched by Sue, Fairhope’s ambassador.
One of the most proud and exciting accomplishments was achieving “Life Master’s Award” playing bridge. Her bridge friends referred to her as the life of the party.
Sue’s “large life” was surrounded by her family and her friends. Her happiest times were in Fairhope.
As everyone remembers, Sue would say “Y’all, I am with all my favorite people.”
Happy trails Mina Sue Calahan; we love you to the moon and back.
“Kiss my grits.” ~ Sue
Sue’s Jubilee will be held July 8, at 5 p.m., in the Nix Center, 1 Bayou Dr. in Fairhope.
