Summer activities return to Bay Minette

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Students at the Bay Minette Recreation Department shuffle into June as summer activities kick off with a dance camp.

Tennis lessons, zumba, skating and more will be offered, according to a summer-activities schedule provided by the department.

Recreation Director Kelly Johnson explained that the Recreation Department will hold a range of classes, camps and sports activities over the summer months.

“We try to offer a variety for kids that have different interests,” she said in a telephone interview.

Johnson pointed out that summer activities can benefit children in many ways.

“It gives them something to do,” she said. “It’s fun. It’s not only social activities, but physical activities. It gives them something to keep them from sitting at home and being bored.”

The first session of Kelly’s Kids kicks off Monday and runs through June 30, 9 a.m.-noon Mondays through Thursdays and will have a Southern Olympics theme, Johnson said. In the program, children ages 5-12 will participate in horse-shoe games, potato-sack races and corn-cob tosses in addition to usual activities such as movie outings and swimming.

The second session of Kelly’s Kids is scheduled for July 11-Aug. 4 and will have a different theme.

As explained in the schedule, the cost of Kelly’s Kids is $50 per session.

Additional summer activities scheduled for Mondays and set to begin June 13 are gymnastics and cheerleading, led by Christina Reid, and ballet and jazz instructed by Lauren Loper.

Zumba classes, led by Reid, are held on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and 5:30-6:30 p.m.
