North Baldwin Summer Enrichment Camps

Registration forms available April 25 at North Baldwin schools

The North Baldwin Coalition for Excellence in Education will offer its first-ever series of summer enrichment camps. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Age requirements, sessions, deadlines listed per class.

The schedule of classes includes:

• Take a Summer Reading Tour

Rising sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders

Tuesdays in June, 10 a.m.-noon

Bay Minette Middle School Library.

The group will select and read different books each week, then come together for a book study club discussion; Kathy Wright, instructor. The cost is $30.

• Cooking with Class

Children ages 8-12.

June 13-17, 9-11 a.m.

Baldwin County High School

Children will learn the basics of food and kitchen safety, how to set a table and use nice table manners. They will learn about good nutrition while having fun and learning to be creative with food. Students will receive a cookbook at the end of the week; Karen Sims, instructor. The cost is $30.

• Are You a Rocket Scientist?

Rising sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders

June 13-17, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bay Minette Middle School

Students will build Bottle Rockets and test for time in the air; Towers and test for strength with the least amount of mass; and Storm the Castle by designing and launching projectiles with a Trebuchet (Catapult). Darla Herrin is the instructor. The cost is $50, and students should bring a lunch.

• Painting Without Fear

June 20-24

Bay Minette Intermediate School Extended Day bulding on 5th Street

9-11 a.m.; cost is $40

Rising 1st- through 3rd-graders

1 to 3:30 p.m.; cost is $50.

Rising 4th- through 6th-graders. The cost is $50.

Classes will be led by professional artists, and students will receive an introduction to painting and other mixed media to create their own masterpieces.Judy Pimperl and Debbie McMickle will be the lead instructors. Guest artists will include Opal Smith and Jo Vickery, among others.

• Camp Lift Off: A Week of Science Discovery

July 11-15, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

Rising 4th-through 6th-graders; cost is $50 and students should bring a lunch.

July 18-22, two sessions: 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.

Rising 1st- through 3rd-graders; the cost is $35 and students should bring a lunch.

These camps will combine math and science skills as students explore space through experiments and other special projects. Instructors are Jo Hellmich and Judy Smedley. Light snacks will be provided at all camps. Students enrolled in the North Baldwin School feeder pattern will be given first preference. Dauphin Island Sea Lab Summer Program

Age requirements, sessions, deadlines listed per class.

• Barrier Island Explorer

Rising 5th- 6th-grade students

July 24-27

Go trawling aboard the Sea Lab’s research vessel the Alabama Discovery, get wet at the beaches and marshes of Dauphin Island, learn first-hand what’s in the water, build and fly your very own kite and participate in fun group activities. This three-night camp is limited to 15 participants. Cost, including meals and housing is $360.

• Gulf Island Journey

Rising 7th-9th-grade students.

June 5-10; June 12-17; July 17-22.

Activities include a trawling expedition aboard the Sea Lab’s research vessel Alabama Discovery; exploring the salt marshes of Dauphin Island; beach-combing and bird-watching on nearby Sand Island; setting up your own saltwater aquarium; and much more. Classes limited to 30 participants in this five-night program. Cost, including meals and housing is $550.

• High School Summer Course

Rising 10th-12th-grade students

June 19-July 15

Application deadline is April 21

This intensive month-long program is an accredited course and is approved by the Alabama State Department of Education, which recommends that local systems grant participating students credit toward either an Advanced or Standard High School Diploma. The high school summer course introduces the student to the marine environment through classroom lecture, laboratory and field activities, and includes an overnight snorkeling trip to St. Andrews State Park. Students live on campus and participate in over 150 hours of supervised academic activities. Cost, including meals and housing is $2,050.

Little meteorologists will learn about seasons, clouds and temperatures in this fun look at the weather around us. Kids will even get a chance to work with a local meteorologist and give the weather forecast in our WKRG News Room.

• You Are What You Eat

Register by May 30.

June 13-17: ages 4-5, K-2nd grade.

Discover how food affects your body in this tasty camp! Campers will learn the science of the food we eat, and how to make healthy and yummy food choices.

• Science, Technology & Engineering

June 13-17: 6th-12th grade.

Register by May 30

Put on your safety gear and get ready to handle heavy metal! This experience is a fast-paced introduction to the world of technology and engineering. Use cutting-edge design software to create your own work of engineering art! BONUS-you will have access to the Exploreum’s 3D printer to print a working prototype of your original design.

• Third Rock from the Sun

June 20-24: ages 4-5, K-2nd grade, 3rd-5th grade.

Planet Earth is the 3rd planet from the Sun and the 5th largest planet in our solar system. Our earth is filled with mountains, volcanoes and so much more! Join us to explore the oceans, the continents and even the inside of the earth.

• Wild Things!

July 11-15: ages 4-5, K-2nd grade, 3rd-5th grade.

Register by June 27.

Box turtles, screech owls and alligators – oh my! The Exploreum and the Environmental Studies Center are working together so that you can take a close look at some of Alabama’s fascinating native wildlife.

• All About Science

July 18-22: ages 4-5, K-2nd grade.

Register by July 3.

Do you want to be a scientist? Learn about chemistry, physics, biology and more. Explore a different science topic each day as you perform experiments and meet real scientists!

• Flight Academy, presented by Airbus

July 18-22: 6th-12th grade.

Register by July 3.

Discover the exciting world of aviation and even learn to fly! This one-of-a-kind adventure will explore the scientific principles of flight, uncover the engineering secrets of modern flight crafts and put you in the pilot’s seat during a REAL flying lesson! It’s a week of science you’ll never forget! This camp is subject to additional fees due to flight time and transportation.

• Spaced Out

July 25-29: Ages 4-5, K-2nd grade, 3rd-5th-grade.

Explore the world beyond our green planet. Travel to Mars, discover the secrets of the stars, and learn about black holes, comets and supernovas.

ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp

Middle School students

June 5-17

Application deadline is April 8

The camp the opportunity to participate in engaging lessons and activities provided by NASA and The Harris Foundation. Campers reside on campus for the duration of the program and attend daily classes taught by university faculty and local secondary teachers.

All applicants must be entering sixth, seventh or eighth grades in the fall of 2011 and enrolled in Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Escambia, Mobile, Monroe or Washington County schools in Alabama. Interested students will need recommendations from their current math and science teachers, a 250-word essay, median-to-superior level scores on all standardized math and science tests within the past year and a B-average or better in all math and science classes to complete their application.

The camp will be held at the University of South Alabama, 307 N. University Blvd, Mobile, Ala.

Music Camp

College level students and younger

June 6-17, 9 a.m.-noon, Monday-Friday

Registration deadline is April 30

Sponsored by the Baldwin County Youth Orchestra, the camp will include classes for voice, band and orchestral (string) students, as well as a piano academy sponsored by Broussard’s Music. The piano academy will allow for beginning students as well as classes for students already able to read music and play. 

The camp will be held at Fairhope Elementary School, 408 N. Section St., Fairhope.

Music Camp-University of Mobile

Grades 4 through 11

June 13-17

8:45 a.m.-3 p.m., Junior Camp

Registration for scholarship deadline: May 5

Students will have the option of taking many different classes ranging from music fundamentals, chorus and various ensembles. Master classes in all instruments and private lessons will also be offered. Campers should have a minimum of one year of disciplined study in music and a recommendation by a music teacher. The camp is under the direction of Barbara Laurendine, adjunct instructor of piano in the UMobile Center for Performing Arts. Full and partial tuition scholarships are available by audition,

Camps will be held at the University of Mobile campus, 5735 College Parkway, Mobile, Ala.

Junior Camp for grades 4-7 costs $165 plus $25 registration fee.

Senior Camp for grades 8-11 costs $185 plus $25 registration fee.

Private lessons are $18 per half-hour lesson.

Opera Camp

Children 8-12

Session 1: July 11-15, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Thursday; and Friday, 5 p.m.

Session 2: July 25-29, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Thursday; and Friday, 5 p.m.

Opera Camp gives children a chance to experience all of the elements of opera production. It culminates in a public performance of an opera created by campers under the guidance of a professional opera director and musical coaches. Campers play music and theatre games that teach them the skills used in operatic performance, and will gain hands-on experience in set, costume, prop, and makeup design. No previous experience or training is necessary for Opera Camp. Cost is $150 per session.

Summer of Fun Day Camp

Students grades 1-8

May 31-July 29, 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday

The camp, a partnership of Fairhope High School and the city of Fairhope, will be held at Volanta Park and the Fairhope Municipal Pool. Activities will be supervised by local coaches and will include ball games, swimming, soccer, tennis, ping pong and arts and crafts. No extended day care will be offered. The cost is $15 per day per child or $60 a week (no half days, full days only). No advance registration is required. There will be no sessions the week of July 4th.
