Summerdale adopts FY 10-11 budget

The Summerdale Town Council voted unanimously to approve and adopt the 2010-2011 general fund budget, which was previously discussed and debated at a meeting on Nov. 8.

Mayor David Wilson said he hopes that the budget, which was designed to be on the conservative side, can be changed and amended as the economy picks up and the town’s revenue increases.

The council also authorized Wayne Dyess to begin working on a revamping of the town’s comprehensive plan, which is out of date. Dyess has agreed to do the work free of charge in order to get Summerdale to a point where there is a definite plan for the future in place that is reflective of Summerdale’s population and geographical boundaries.

Summerdale’s old police station will also have a new tenant very soon, pending lease agreements between the town of Summerdale and the Summerdale Church of Christ. The Summerdale Church of Christ intends to use the old police station as a place to hold its Hispanic ministries. The town is expecting to receive $750 a month in rent for the property. The lease agreement has not yet been finalized, but Councilman Hughes has been authorized to ensure that the agreement is good for the town.

The council also approved an ordinance which allows for the town to enter into an agreement with the Town of Loxley for dispatching services. This year’s agreement is identical to the one used last year.

The council also approved Councilman Myles Bishop as the replacement for Councilman Gerald Hughes on the planning commission.

The Summerdale Christmas parade was also announced at the council meeting. The parade will take place on Dec. 11 at 2 p.m.
