SUMMERDALE, Ala. — Baseball teams looking to practice in Summerdale can now do so for free.
During Monday’s regular meeting, the Summerdale Town Council eljminated the $20 fee to practice on any field in the town.
However, fees to play games and tournaments remain.
The council broached the issue in November when Councilwoman Cheryl Wallace Stewart pointed out that leagues were choosing not to practice on the fields, all of which had been fully refurbished over the summer, because of the practice fee. In that discussion, she pointed out that neighboring municipalities, such as Foley, did not charge a practice fee.
Prior to Monday’s vote, the discussion continued.
“I checked with the Leage of Municipalities,” said Town Clerk Tiffany Lynn. “They said as long as you treat everybody fairly, it’s OK.”
Summerdale Public Works Director said his biggest concern was the cost of using lights to illuminate the fields after dark. However, council members said that normal practice times take place during daylight hours.
Upon Monday’s vote, the Council agreed to monitor the situation and adjust the ballfield policy in the future if needed.
