SUMMERDALE, Ala. — An upgrade to Summerdale Sports Assocation’s programs could be possible later this year. That’s because during Summerdale Town Council’s regular meeting Monday, Association Vice President Nathan Kidwell asked the council to consider adding a paid position that would streamline the promotion and scheduling of athletic events, which are currently limited to youth baseball.
“Some of the other towns that are growing faster than we are have one person over it (town sports programs),” he told the council.
Kidwell also said that currently, volunteers who coach Summerdale youth baseball carry out additional duties when not working or coaching.
“It’s hard for us to promote and make decisions on coaches and schedulingL” he said.
Kidwell also said having a paid person over the program could keep it financially sound. As an example of the need, he cited recent mispending of association funds that left the association with a negative $400 balance.
“The only thing that saved y’all was the (Summerdale) Police Department giving you some sponsorship,” Summerdale Mayor David Wilson said.
Kidwell added that he hoped the position would also allow better prevention of Summerdale children playing in other areas, such as Foley or Elberta.
“If a child lives in Summerdale, he needs to be playing in Summerdale,” he told the council. “If they want to play in another city, we are supposed to give them a letter of release.”
Kidwell also said he hoped the position he proposed would allow for the establishment of additional youth athletic programs in Summerdale, such as soccer and football.
“We’ve got enough land in Summerdale,” he said.
Summerdale Mayor Pro-tem Mayor Norma Wilson Giles agreed.
“As a field for soccer, the school has a field,” she said.
After further discussion, the council decided to table the issue until September.
“That’s when we start looking at our budget for the next year,” Wilson said.
Also Monday, the council:
* Scheduled a special workshop for 6:30 p.m. May 24 to discuss a debriscontract.
* Heard Summerdale Public Works Director John Resmondo report that the town’s water-well test site has been drilled to 320 feet and that a lack of electricity caused a delay in pumping for water.
* Approved the Severe Weather Sales Tax Holiday, scheduled for the first weekend of July.
