SUMMERDALE, Ala. — The Summerdale Town Cemetery could soon require one person per grave, with no exceptions.
“Not two in one,” Mayor David Wilson said during Tuesday’s regular workshop.
He made that statement as the Town Council reviewed its cemetery policy. That discussion led to the realization that several graves have more than one person buried in them.
“So, my daddy’s buried out there,” said Councilwoman Norman Wilson Giles. “If I died, they could dig a hole and put my casket on top of that?”
“That’s what’s been happening over there,” Wilson replied.
While reviewing the policy, the Council discussed the portion of the policy that allowed for multiple burials if one person had been cremated. However, Wilson reiterated his opinion that only one person should be buried in one grave.
“That’s the way I feel about it,” Giles agreed.
The Council agreed to consider changing the policy to reflect that mandate.
