Summerdale council considering hiring new police chief from within department

FOLEY, Ala. - T.J. Palkovic, a Summerdale police officer, has applied for the town's vacant police chief position.

The Summerdale Town Council and mayor will interview Palkovic Tuesday for the job.

Palkovic — police officer with the most seniority in the Summerdale Police Department — has worked as an officer in the town since 2007, and he has attended the last two council meetings to give department head reports concerning police activity in the town. This duty usually is handled by the police chief, Mayor David Wilson said; but the town has been without a chief since March 17, the date the council unanimously voted to terminate Dwain Riebeling's employment with the town.

The council held a hearing and vote at the town's Municipal Complex regarding Wilson's request for the termination of Riebeling's employment as town police chief. The reasons for termination include: incompetence and inefficiency; inattention to duty; neglect of duty regarding a Nov. 9, 2010 incident; and insubordination.

Summerdale does not have an interim police chief, but Lt. Tony Nolfe of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office is helping oversee the town's police department.

The council has interviewed three applicants — Stanley DeVane, Thomas Harrington and Frankie Ingram — for the vacant position thus far.
