Summerdale Council considers increasing water rates

SUMMERDALE — Summerdale residents could soon see an increase in their water bill.

That’s because during its regular work session Tuesday, the Summerdale Town Council discussed acquiring a bond issue to fund a water well that is currently under construction north of its current counterpart on Davis.

“The last rate increase the town of Summerdale had was in 2006,” Summerdale Mayor David Wilson said in the work session.

He added that prior to that, Summerdale water rates had been on a step-increase scale for several years, but the Council had never voted to continue that scale.

“We were supposed to come back in 2006 and look at continuing that gradual increase, but that never happened,” Wilson said.

However, he said, the construction of the new well deems such an increase a necessity.

The increase that Wilson proposed it a $5 hike on the minimum payment for 2,000 gallons of water used per month.

“After that, an increase of 5 cents per 1,000 gallons,” the mayor said.

Wilson explained that the increase would not affect water rates for Summerdale’s commercial customers.

“Those rates are high now,” he said.

As previously reported, the construction of a new well came when testing of the original 10-year-old well indicated contaminants in the water supply. That prompted the town of Summerdale to shut down the well and begin purchasing water from Robertsdale and Riviera Utilities.

The Summerdale Council will consider the proposed residential water-rate increase at its next regular meeting, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday.
