SUMMERDALE, Ala. — The Summerdale Town Council will revisit its ordinance on baseball fields next week.
During Tuesday’s Council workshop, Council member Cheryl Wallace Stewart broached the issue by proposing a revision of the ordinance that would only require teams practicing on the town’s fields to pay a fee if the lights are used.
“If they’re not using the lights, I don’t see why they should have to pay,” she said.
As previously reported, the Council approved funds to refurbish the ball fields in the town earlier this year with the intention of attracting year-round leagues to the facilities.
Tuesday the Council discussed the current requirement of a $20 fee for teams to practice on the fields, in addition to the fees for games and tournaments. That discussion pointed out that neighboring municipalities charge no such fee for practices if lights are not used.
The discussion also touched on the town’s efforts with MVP to bring its fall ball league to the town and recent tournaments going to other municipalities even after the town refurbished its fields. It also touched on the town’s requirement of MVP to bring its facility up to code.
Once the discussion came back to the fields, Stewart said MVP does not make money during its practices and organizers have sought other fields that don’t charge.
“They’re going over to Foley to practice,” she said.
Following additional discussion, the Council agreed to put the issue on the agenda for Monday’s regular meeting.
