SUMMERDALE, Ala. - The Summerdale Town Council discussed enacting an ordinance making it illegal to text and drive at Tuesday's work session.
According to Police Chief Frankie "Eddie" Ingram, the ordinance would be tough to enforce.
"It'd be almost impossible," he said. "It might help curb a little bit of it, but people are going to text."
The only way the ordinance could be enforced is if an officer pulls a driver over for another traffic violation and sees the driver text messaging. An officer cannot stop a vehicle solely because the officer suspects the driver of texting.
"If it's not a primary offense, someone could be texting right alongside the officer," Ingram said.
Councilman Gerald Hughes said there could be a way to use the ordinance to promote among drivers that texting and driving is "not a smart thing to do," and maybe a higher punishment is received if texting causes a wreck.
