Summerdale PD to begin strict enforcement of speed limit along Alabama 59

SUMMERDALE, Ala. - The Summerdale Police Department plans to lock down on speeding along Alabama 59, Summerdale Police Chief Frankie "Eddie" Ingram said Friday.

The speed limit on the highway going through the town is 55 mph, and Ingram said the average speed in the area is around 62-64 mph.

"We're going to cut that out," he said, noting the speed limit needs better enforcement because of the high traffic volume due to summer holidays and a recent increase in vehicle accidents.

"We had (a wreck Thursday) and had one (Friday)," he said.

Ingram said there were around five accidents within the last week, and police also will look for "aggressive drivers switching in and out of lanes.

"We're going to enforce that, too."

Ingram said any drivers caught going 60 mph or above in the area will receive a ticket.

"I'd rather write tickets than work wrecks," he said.

An accident happened Friday morning involving a vehicle coming from the southbound lane of the highway into the northbound lane and collided with another vehicle head on, Ingram said. The chief called it a "serious" accident.
