SUMMERDALE — Summerdale Police Chief Eddie Ingram is on the road to recovery after being injured last week while making an arrest.
During the Summerdale Town Council meeting Monday, Summerdale Police Maj. Trent Dennis said Ingram was scheduled to leave Thomas Hospital Tuesday morning following surgery on a leg injury he received while working with U.S. Marshals to arrest 36-year-old Ray Gene Middleton II of Silverhill on March 7.
Trent explained that authorities arrested Middleton, who was a wanted fugitive, at Garrison Mobile Home Park off County Road 36 Thursday night.
“We were serving a warrant issued through the U.S. Marshalls office,” the major said.
Trent said that both he and Ingram and Marshals surrounded the trailer Middleton was in.
“I had five officers out there,” he said. “We knew he was going to run, and when you know that, you always have at least four officers.”
Middleton was in the trailer with five additional people, none of whom were arrested or charged. But once seized, he struggled and fell on Ingram, breaking one of his legs in two places, according to Trent.
“Then I Tazed him,” Trent said of Middleton’s capture.
As previously reported, Middleton was taken to Baldwin County Corrections Facility on several charges, while Ingram was taken to Thomas Hospital for surgery on Friday.
Dennis said Ingram has to undergo physical therapy and another operation, but should recover fully in about 12 weeks. In the meantime, he can return to administrative duties once cleared by Summerdale Mayor David Wilson.
“He’s still running this agency right now,” Trent said in an interview after the meeting.
The date of Ingram’s return to work was not available at press time.
