Summerdale Police gun safety classes return

SUMMERDALE, Ala. — Summerdale Police Department will resume its gun-safety classes next week.

During Monday’s Summerdale Town Council meeting, Police Chief Jimmy Davis announced that the classes will begin Saturday, Jan. 25,

“The classes will be held at Summerdale Municipal Complex at 9 a.m,” a Summerdale Police Department announcement stated. “When the class is completed we will move to the firing range.”

Davis explained that he plans to keep the class size small.

“Classes will be limited to 15 people,” he said, adding that only pistols will be covered in the curriculum.

The fee of $15 will cover the cost of supplies and materials. In addition, students are asked to bring 50 bullets for their model of pistol. Plus, prior to class, weapons will be checked to make sure they are not loaded.

Davis also told the Council that under this new format, classes are for first-time students only.

“But we will have a refresher course for those wanting to just come out and practice,” the police chief said.

While these classes are limited to adults, Davis said a class for ages 8-16 will be held on April 5.

“This will be classroom only for the first phase,” he said.

Additional class times for adults will be Feb. 8 and 22, March 8, april 26, May 10 and 24, and June 7.

The Summerdale Police Department had previously conducted gun-safety classes. However, they were halted upon last year’s departure of previous police chief Eddie Ingram.
