SUMMERDALE — The Summerdale Police Department has announced that officers will run extra traffic patrols in the town’s construction zones.

“Particularly on County Roads 36 and 32 East,” Summerdale Police Chief Eddie Ingram said in a telephone interview.

He explained that speed limits in those areas are 35 miles per hour. However, that limit has not been adhered.

“Some vehicles have gone through construction zones in excess of 70 miles per hour,” Ingram said.

The police chief added that one woman told authorities that while she slows to the 35 miles-per-hour speed limit in those zones, she has been passed by vehicles exceeding that speed.

Ingram said the speed limit in construction zones is to ensure the safety of construction workers, and violating that speed can endanger both them and drivers.

He added that in addition to adding extra patrol officers in construction zones, the penalty for speeding will be increased.

“Be aware that the speeding fines in these areas are doubled and will cost the violator more than $400 for a speeding ticket,” Ingram said.
