SUMMERDALE, Ala. — The Summerdale Town Council will meet a little early Monday evening.
During its regular workshop this past Tuesday, the Council called a special workshop at 5 p.m., Monday, Feb. 10, to discuss ideas for the town’s 2014 Independence Day Celebration.
Summerdale Mayor David Wilson called the meeting after a discussion on those plans, which was spurred by Bubba Blackwell’s offer to return to Summerdale this year with his daredevil act. That led to the discussion of how expensive such a program is and that sponsorships need to be secured months in advance.
“The cost starts at $20,000,” Wilson said, adding that Blackwell said his 2014 shows would be filmed by ESPN cable network.
It also led to the Council’s discussion of increasing its budget for Fourth of July fireworks and of possibly offering some other form of entertainment or festivities on the holiday.
“We probably need to up our fireworks budget a little bit,” Wilson said.
“A lot of people are wanting to do something really nice in Summerdale,” Councilman Travis Townsend said.
Councilwoman Norma Wilson Giles said she had come across Mississippi-based vocal trio, Dave’s Highway.
“They’re a YouTube sensation,” she said, adding that her research had revealed the group, which performs country, gospel and Contemporary Christian music, could be booked for a reasonable price.
That discussion led Wilson to set the special workshop at Summerdale Town Hall and asking that anyone with ideas should attend.
The Council’s regular February meeting will follow the special workshop at 6 p.m.
